Family Settings: Privacy and Friends

Manage your child's online interactions from the Privacy and Friends area in Family Settings.

For example, other people on LIVE may want to add your child to their friends list. You can require that these requests be approved by you, or you can allow your child to approve them on his or her own.

For many of the Privacy and Friends settings, you can choose to allow your child to have one of three levels of contact:

  • Select Everyone to allow your child to communicate with anyone on LIVE.
  • Select Friends Only to limit communication and sharing to only people on your child's friends list. (Be sure to manage your child's friends list using the Online Friends control.)
  • Select Blocked to prevent everyone from communicating with your child or from seeing your child's profile, and to prevent your child from communicating with anyone else on LIVE.

Whatever settings you choose, your child can still receive new friend requests.

Before you can change Family Settings, your child must sign up for a child account and you must complete the parental approval steps to set up your child's account. For details, see Intro to Family Settings.

To configure your child's settings for privacy and friends:

  1. In the Guide, click your child's gamer card.
  2. On the Gamer Profile screen, select Account Management. When asked to open a browser window, click Yes.
  3. In the gamer profile area of Xbox.com, click Family Settings. Sign in with the e-mail address and password you used during the parental approval steps.
  4. On the Confirm your child's Family Settings page, configure your child's account for the following Privacy & Friends settings:
    • Online Friends. Decide whether your child can approve friend requests from other LIVE members, or whether they need to be approved by you. If you select Requires Approval, you will need to enter your Windows Live ID password to approve any friend request that your child receives. This setting also affects friend requests that your child sends out.
    • Voice and Text. Manage who your child can communicate with on LIVE using voice and text. Voice and text communication on LIVE includes voice chat, messages, and game invites.
    • Video. Manage who your child can communicate with on LIVE using video.
    • Profile Sharing. Manage who can see your child's profile information, including motto, achievements, and game history.
    • Profile Viewing. Decide whether your child can see other people's profile information, including motto, achievements, and game history.
    • Online Status. Decide who can see your child's online status. Status includes details such as the game your child is playing or whether he or she is available to play a game.
  5. Click Save.

Note

Family Settings remain in force whether your child accesses LIVE using Windows or an Xbox 360 console, as long as he or she signs in with the same child account. Not all the settings are relevant to Games for Windows – LIVE accounts.

For details on how to change Family Settings from the Xbox 360 console or the original Xbox console, see the Family Settings page on Xbox.com.
